How to improve U.S. -Middle East relations

On Minnesota Public Radio today I listened to Middle East expert Shibley Telhami on improving US relations with the Middle East.  He made a few interesting comments, most notably he challenged the uniformity of the concept of the “Muslim-World,” as it has been known in post-911 US foreign policy and the importance of religion in shaping understanding conflict and the potential for peace.  Telhami argues that US policy has overemphasized religion in their understanding of the “Muslim-world” and that it is political issues like ending the war in Iraq, closing Guantanamo Bay and willingness to stand up to Western hegemony (US, Israel) that drive sentiments in the Middle East.
